Research into Songs for a Music Video
I spent some time looking into a variety of different genres for my music video, including alternative rock, rap and ska, however it made sense to me to go with a genre which I enjoy, understand and engage with both on an emotional and social level; drum and bass is a genre which I feel allows me more creative freedom within my narrative due to the tracks themselves usually having looser meanings which are subject to individual interpretation. I want to convey a narrative of a lost love and moving on within my music video, as I feel that a simplistic narrative will be easier to plan and shoot, whilst also being relatable and interesting to the audience. I also wish to display an element of nostalgia to my music video. None of the songs which I have chosen have music videos, whether this be due to the fact that creating narrative themed videos for drum and bass is challenging or because many of these artists do not have huge production budgets for the promotion of their tracks, which I feel allows me more creative freedom within the planning of my narrative and within execution, as the theme is auteured and executed by myself rather than being influenced by the original.
We Got It- Metrik ft Rothwell (S.P.Y. Remix)
This is a song which I personally enjoy, and one which I found a couple of years ago from footage of the festival 'Hospitality in the Park' on Facebook. For me, the song is one which I've spent a lot of time listening to and connect with on a personal level; I feel that the lyrics, whilst simplistic, could be easily reflect the emotions and thoughts which relate to the end of a relationship, especially lines such as "I leave you my heart so take it, showed you my hand your time to play it, I don't want time to change it" and "I've got a lot of love riding on you". I find that the repetitive bass line in this song lends itself well to being able to incorporate jump cuts into my music video between locations, which I feel could be helpful to show the movement of time within the film.
Parallel- Technimatic ft Zara Kershaw (LSB Remix)
This track I feel is one of my top few choices and one of my personal favourite tracks, for the brief, as the liquid sound and emotionally fuelled lyrics fit alongside my narrative perfectly, outlining a lost relationship.
"it's a moment parallel with a different version of events, so we might as well forget thinking about what could happen next". The song is song is soft yet upbeat, and the lyrical side of the song takes around a minute to kick in, leaving this chunk of time to formulate and clarify the narrative of my music video by perhaps showing the ending of the relationship of the aftermath of this and highlighting the feelings of loneliness and sadness to the audience for my point character prior to her leaving the house.
Sincerely Yours- BCee ft Leo Wood (Whiney Remix)
Whilst having an entirely different feel to the other tracks that I have chosen, with a low and wobbly bassline and a sound that you'd expect to find in a rave somewhere in Digbeth, the lyrics, again speak to me in terms of my ideal narrative; "and a thousand times I've been hurt, stops me breathing". Despite falling more under the roller subgenre of drum and bass, I find that this trait could be particularly useful within the dance scenes to create an easy chreography as well as being perfect to edit jump cuts between locations and scenes in the production, such as the shift between streets or venue and the shifts in the company held by the point character.
Blue Soul- Walk:r (ft Roxi Yung) Particle Remix.
I found this song a couple of months ago in a mix from an event at Print Works in London on Soundcloud. I am including this in my final list of potential songs for my music video because I feel that the song encompasses the feel of the drum and bass scene at the moment with the deep bass contrasting to the soft, almost jazz-like lo-fi vocal elements of the song, which I feel would accompany my narrative well as it conveys both negative and positive emotion together.
